“A city must be a place where groups of women and men are seeking and developing the highest things they know.”——Margaret Mead, Cultural Anthropologist
“All great art is born of the metropolis.”——Ezra Pound, Poet
The thriving metropolis of Shenzhen, developed as a hub for commerce and technology, couldn’t help but also become a force in the arts and humanities as befits its status as a dynamic city of over 12 million residents from all over the world. A fishing hamlet that housed the last mainland train stop on the Canton-Kowloon line, Shenzhen was anointed by Deng Xiaoping as an experimental, special economic zone (SEZ) in 1980 and flourished in a few, short decades to rival its nearby neighbor, Hong Kong, in vibrancy and worldliness.
Although engineers come and worship the tech gods at Shenzhen, which stands as a formidable digital mecca apart from Silicon Valley, man cannot live on bread and gadgets alone as he needs sustenance for the soul and candy for the eyes.
Befitting the city’s spirit of experimentation and innovation, Shenzhen has cultivated a thriving creative scene and offers visitors a culturally enriching journey through its pockets of arts enclaves, taking them beyond its renown as a Chinese economic engine.
